Nourishing Fertility and Womb Health with Castor Oil
As we move further into early fall, the energy of the changing season invites us to keep checking in with our bodies. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) associates this time with ripening, harvest, and nourishment, which can be a natural time to focus on fertility and womb health—whether that means preparing the body for conception, tending to uterine conditions, or simply deepening our connection with our own cycles.
One gentle, time-honored self-care practice we love to recommend to our patients is the use of castor oil packs for fertility and menstruation support. While traditionally done with flannel soaked in castor oil, we’re fond of a simpler, less messy method: applying castor oil directly with a convenient roll-on applicator.
How to Use Castor Oil Packs at Home
When to apply: Castor oil packs are best used during the follicular phase of your cycle—the time after menstruation and before ovulation. Avoid using them during the first few days of your cycle or if you may already be pregnant.
How to apply: Using a roll-on castor oil bottle, gently massage the oil into the lower abdomen (just below the belly button and above the pubic bone). Apply a warm compress, such as a hot water bottle or heating pad, over the area for 20–30 minutes. You may want to place a towel between the oil and your heating pad, as castor oil can be sticky.
How often: 3–4 times per week during the follicular phase is ideal for fertility support. Consistency is key to seeing benefits.
The Benefits from a Scientific Perspective
Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, a unique fatty acid known for its anti-inflammatory and circulation-enhancing properties. When applied topically with gentle heat, it:
Improves blood and lymphatic flow to the reproductive organs
Reduces pelvic congestion and inflammation
Supports the body’s natural detoxification processes
These actions help create a healthier uterine and ovarian environment—especially valuable for conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, and PCOS, where inflammation, poor circulation, and congestion can be obstacles to fertility.
Castor Oil Packs through the Lens of TCM
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fertility depends on the free flow of qi (meaning life-force or energy in Mandarin) and blood through the lower abdomen. Stagnation—whether from cold, dampness, or emotional stress—can disrupt reproductive harmony.
Castor oil packs help in several ways:
Warming the womb: The gentle heat disperses cold and promotes circulation, creating a fertile environment for new life.
Moving stagnation: Regular application helps smooth qi and blood flow, reducing pain and tension.
Supporting balance: By nourishing the body’s yin (in this case “fluids” in Mandarin) and encouraging the free flow of yang (in this case “warmth and movement” in Mandarin), castor oil packs bring the reproductive system into greater harmony.
For those navigating endometriosis, castor oil packs can help soften and move painful stagnation. For fibroids, they may assist in breaking up accumulations and supporting circulation. For PCOS, improved blood flow and reduced inflammation support healthier ovulatory cycles.
Gentle Support Alongside Acupuncture
We often incorporate castor oil packs into our fertility acupuncture sessions at our Louisville clinic. Together acupuncture and castor oil packs encourage your body to shift out of patterns of stagnation and into greater balance, resilience, and receptivity. Whether you’re seeking natural fertility treatments or support for endometriosis, fibroids, or PCOS, this integrative approach can make a meaningful difference.

One of our guiding principles is to share tools that are both effective and accessible. The beauty of castor oil packs is their simplicity—just a small ritual of warmth and care, and yet the impact can be profound.
We invite you to explore this practice, not only as a step toward fertility but also as a way of tending to your body with patience and compassion.
